Living In L.A.: Look Out For These Bugs

There are a lot of wonderful things about living in L.A. The beautiful weather is just one of the many perks that draw people to this part of the country. But, living in L.A. also comes with some of the same issues that plague the residents in other parts of the country. One of these shared issues is the presence of bugs inside homes. If you are living in L.A., the main bugs to look out for are German cockroaches, spiders, and ants.

German cockroaches

German cockroaches are one of the most common types of bugs you will find if you live in the L.A. area. In fact, they are one of the most common pests in urban areas across the United States. These pests can cause big problems for people when they infest a home. They can transmit disease-producing organisms to humans and lead to illnesses such as food poisoning, dysentery, and diarrhea. The way they transmit these organisms is by contaminating the food and surfaces inside of your home. German cockroaches can also cause problems for people who have asthma or allergies. Their carcasses and feces can create dust that induces asthma or allergy attacks in people that have preexisting conditions. If you live in L.A. you cannot run away from the German cockroach but you can take some steps to keep them out of your home. Read more about how to keep German cockroaches out of your home here.

Spiders

Some people are fascinated with spiders while others are terrified. No matter where you fall on the spectrum, you will likely run into a few if you live in L.A. The climate in L.A. is friendly to a variety of spider species. Spreading disease is not something you typically have to worry about with spiders. The thing that scares most people is the possibility of a dangerous spider bite. There are a few types of spiders that can cause problems for humans-such as the brown recluse and the black widow-but most spider bites are harmless. That piece of information may be comforting but it probably does not change the fact that you want to keep spiders out of your home. Regular home maintenance and regularly scheduled pest control services can work together to help you keep your home free from eight legged house guests.

Ants

Ants do not typically send people running in the way a roach or spider can. But, they are still a bothersome type of pest that is common in L.A. If you have ever seen a line of ants marching across your kitchen floor you know that they are typically drawn inside in search of food. Cleaning spills quickly and making sure all of your food containers remain closed will go a long way toward keeping the ants outside. If you have a persistent ant problem that you cannot seem to shake then you may need the help of a pest control professional.
